Huawei and some other companies use the in-house processor of Huawei in their flagship smartphones. But that might create a problem for Huawei.
The United States has imposed restrictions on HiSilicon from dealing with tech companies based in America. It is the chip manufacturing unit of Huawei.
Some reports state that the US administration has restricted the TSMC or Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company to work with US-based companies. As per Huawei official notification, it is confirmed that they have stopped taking new orders. They will launch P50 with the other company’s chipset, which is expected to hit the market in 2021.
John Vinh, Capital Market analyst, said that Huawei might opt for Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chipset processor for their P50 and Mate 50 flagship smartphones.
Qualcomm needs clearance from the commerce department of the US if they want to supply the processor chips to Huawei. When the license is given, the company will create a patent license agreement between Huawei and Qualcomm.
But when Qualcomm gets the license, Huawei phones will be powered by the Snapdragon from next year. Possibly, Qualcomm will supply Snapdragon 875 CPUs to Huawei, that they are going to use in their P50 and Mate 50.
In the near future, Huawei has two chipset options like Samsung. Huawei can work on the dual-chip strategy, similar to what Samsung is working on. Currently, Samsung has released one variant of their smartphone with the Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and other with the Samsung’s Exynos chips, which is their own chipset.
It should be interesting to see whether Huawei uses this strategy or not. They can easily use this strategy by releasing the phone with Kirin 1020 processors (in-house processor) for the domestic market and Qualcomm or MediaTek’s chip for the rest of the world.
Let’s talk about the Kirin 1020 processor by Huawei. It is based on the 5nm processor, and the company is claiming that it will offer 50% more energy than the previous Kirin 990 processor.
If you want to know about the Mate 40, you might be shocked to hear that there is no news regarding this smartphone. The only detail in the public domain is the involvement of the 108MP primary camera, which seems quite interesting. Previously, it was expected that Mate 40 would hit the market in 2020, but there might be some delay.
If Huawei launches this phone with their in-house processor, then there will be no delay; otherwise, you can expect this phone in 2021.
